Nature Walk

Our first official day of homeschool went fairly well, all things considered. It's going to take some time to work out those darn kinks.

We had a mini field trip of sorts in the afternoon. The husband didn't have work so we all wanted out of the house for a little while. We visited a local nature trail to get some fresh air. There was a lot of walking involved and even some running by the boys, so.... PE maybe? We'll figure it out.

Kadin being Kadin wanted to read the information. No prompting necessary! This one was about snakes we might encounter. We didn't, fortunately.

Kadin, husband, and dog ran on ahead, leaving Ansel and I behind. Oh well, photo opportunity!

I also managed to convince Kadin to let me take a picture. This is just about the time we realized there was very likely a skunk nearby. So we high-tailed it right out of there!

And here's that ugly little dog running straight at me. He's nothing, if not enthusiastic! His name is McFly, by the way. He's also currently curled up right next to me on the couch. This, after he managed to dig an oatmeal cookie I had in my purse. Hrmph. Not cool, McFly, not cool.

  1. Oh, I can't wait till Spring comes here in Maine and we can get back to hiking as a family! Our dog LOVES to go on hikes with us, and the kids love it too! We went once in the snow last year, but it's really slippery so I don't trust myself solo with the two kids and our dog :) Looks like you had FUN! Great learning experience!

    1. Yes, we don't really have weather limitations here. Even when it's "cold" it's not cold by most standards people up north are accustomed to. Of course, summers are stifling and it makes you never want to leave the house. So there's that.

And let it be known, this could hardly be considered a "hike." My husband would balk at calling it that. It's completely flat at this nature park. We got kind of a late start to the day and I wasn't feeling especially enthusiastic, so we didn't go to the further away park that has more intense trails. Another day.

    2. Hello, I found your blog kind of randomly and am so glad I did. Your post about your decision to homeschool was fascinating and I'm looking forward to reading about how it goes. One question, how did you pick the name, "Ansel?"

    3. Hi! I appreciate you finding me!

The name was a bit of a combination of things. We came across it in a baby name book and liked it. But at the same time, while I was pregnant, PBS was running their documentary(or maybe even a miniseries) on Ansel Adams over and over. I kept catching bits and parts and, already being a fan of his, hearing the name over and over kind of caught on. Plus, it's pretty unusual while not being a "weird" name, so it worked for us. I'm pretty fond of it!

  2. Hi - thanks for stopping by my blog! Kadin is so adorable - you guys look like such a happy family. Personally, I do not think your dog is ugly at all! I love pups and have kind of a blind eye when it comes to looks.

Sadly, we can't have any because hubs is allergic. Even to the hypo-allergenic ones. Boo.

    1. Thank you!

Yes, you might just be a little blind to it :) I'll have to do a post with more pictures of him. He started out as just an adorable, tiny pup. And now he's grown into this..... thing. LOL. Some people say he's cute, but I'm not sure if they're just trying to be nice. I think he's cute in sort o an ugly dog, put together with mismatched parts kind of way. It's probably not his fault, though :) He's a weird mix.

  3. I am so excited for things like this during homeschooling! We plan to continue our travels through home school and I can't wait for hikes to explain geology, trips to national monuments to explain history, nature walks exploring bugs and plants for science, road trips for geography... I want to go back and do elementary school MY way!

  4. Hi
Hope the early days of home schooling are going well. We've been home educating for five and a half years now. Like you it took us a while to take the plunge and take the kids out of school.
Enjoy your new way of life.

    1. So far so good! We had a really productive morning today, so I'm very happy about that. It's 1 o'clock and everyone's "school" is done, so that's not half bad!
